Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty is plastic surgery performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids, indicated to remove excess skin, muscles, and fat pockets that cause sagging, bags under the eyes, and a “tired” or aged appearance.
This procedure is often sought for aesthetic reasons, to rejuvenate the eye area, but it can also be functional, improving the visual field when excess skin “weighs” on the eyelashes.
This procedure is indicated for
Removal of fat pockets: Both on the lower and upper eyelids, reducing puffiness under the eyes.
Correction of sagging and excess skin: Eliminates folds and wrinkles in the eyelid area.
Functional improvement: Corrects drooping of the upper eyelids (ptosis), which can interfere with vision.
Rejuvenation: Provides a lighter and more youthful look.
How is the procedure performed?
Anesthesia and duration: Usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation, the surgery is quick, lasting about an hour to an hour and a half.
Incisions: The incisions are made in the natural folds of the upper eyelid and just below the eyelashes on the lower eyelid, which makes the scars virtually imperceptible after healing.
Hospitalization: It is an outpatient surgery, which means that the patient returns home on the same day.
Recovery and Care
Stitches: Usually removed 5 to 7 days after surgery.
Postoperative: Swelling (edema) and bruising are common, but they subside with the use of cold compresses and prescribed ointments.
Care: It is necessary to avoid sun exposure, smoking, and intense physical activity for at least two weeks.
Results: The first results appear in a few weeks, with the final result consolidated after a few months.
Difference between Upper and Lower Eyelids
Upper: Focuses on excess skin that creates a “hood” over the eyes.
Lower: Focuses on treating fat pockets and lower sagging.
They can be done together or separately.
Blepharoplasty is recommended for people who feel uncomfortable with their tired appearance, usually starting at age 40 or 45, but it can also be performed on younger patients due to genetic characteristics.
